LifeVac Device: How This Simple Tool Could Save a Life in a Choking Emergency

Choking is a sudden, frightening emergency that can happen anytime — to children, adults, or the elderly. In fact, choking is a leading cause of accidental death in the UK, particularly among vulnerable groups like toddlers and older adults.

Most people know how to perform back blows and abdominal thrusts (the Heimlich manoeuvre). But what happens if these don’t work? Or if the person choking can’t be positioned properly due to pregnancy, obesity, or being in a wheelchair?

That’s where the LifeVac device comes in. At Castleford Training Solutions, we believe every home, restaurant, school, and care home should know about this life-saving tool. Here’s why.

LifeVac device

The LifeVac is a portable, non-powered airway clearance device designed to help remove obstructions from a person’s airway when they’re choking. It works by creating a powerful suction that pulls the blockage out of the throat, rather than trying to push air past it.

It looks a bit like a large plunger with a mask on the end. When pressed over the mouth and nose, it forms a seal; pulling the plunger then generates negative pressure to dislodge the stuck item.

Why consider LifeVac alongside traditional choking first aid?

Current UK guidelines (Resuscitation Council UK) say you should always use standard choking protocols first: encourage coughing, apply back blows, and then abdominal thrusts. However, these don’t always work.

Some people can’t have abdominal thrusts. Pregnant women, wheelchair users, or very frail individuals may be difficult or dangerous to treat with manual thrusts.
Even when done correctly, they may fail. Studies show abdominal thrusts work roughly 70–80% of the time, leaving a significant gap.
Every second counts. Brain damage can start within 4–6 minutes without oxygen.

The LifeVac device is designed as a last-resort option when conventional methods fail, or can’t be performed.
